MacDougall laced a tie-breaking three-run triple in the fourth to give the Tigers their first lead while Brady Morin fired 4.1 key innings of relief as Taunton earned a spot in the Div. 1 state title game in an 10-6 win over No. 6 St John’s Shrewsbury on Tuesday night at Holy Cross.

The defending champion Tigers (20-4) will make their third state final appearance in four years.

“Our guys just enjoy playing the game,” Taunton coach Blair Bourque said. “I don’t think anyone plays these games to win state championships. We play for our teammates, ourselves, our family, and our community. I’ve just incredibly proud of what these guys have accomplished so far.”

St. John’s held a tenuous 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third, but a MacDougall’s two-out RBI single to center evened the score.

One inning later, the Dayton signee who lifted Taunton to the state championship a year ago with a tie-breaking home run in the final versus Franklin, delivered again with the game-changing hit.

With the bases loaded, two outs, and a full count MacDougall, blasted a bases clearing triple to right to put Taunton in front 6-3. A wild pitch moments later brought home MacDougall to put the Tigers up 7-3.

“We had to battle back and our pitching staff did an amazing job,” MacDougall said. “We compete well. We just manage to get the job done and put up runs when we have to.”

Morin meanwhile was efficient in relief. The right hander escaped a jam in the third, held the Pioneers scoreless in the fourth and fifth, and allowing just a lone run in the sixth.

Ahead 8-4 in the bottom of the sixth, Taunton star Dawson Bryce put on the exclamation point launching a two-run blast to left to give the Tigers a 10-4 advantage.

“Ryan is a clutch player who has been hard on himself all year,” Bourque said. “He’s had some good games and some tough plays but it shows his tenacity.”

St. John’s jumped out of the gate as James Benestad blasted a leadoff home run on the second pitch of the game to put the Pioneers up 1-0. Later in the inning the visitors stretched their lead as Noah Basgaard connected on an RBI groundout before Brady Collins singled to make it 3-0 St. John’s.

Speedy Notre Dame Academy runs past East Longmeadow, 22-6 https://www.bostonherald.com/2023/06/13/speedy-notre-dame-academy-runs-past-east-longmeadow-22-6/ Wed, 14 Jun 2023 00:32:41 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=3097688 WALPOLE — To truly have a shot at beating Notre Dame Academy of Hingham’s girls lacrosse team, you have to prove that you can run with the Cougars, who possess uncommon team speed.

For the first half of Tuesday’s Division 2 state semifinal, heavy underdog East Longmeadow did just that, and were within shouting distance.

But after that, East Longmeadow found out what everyone who has played NDA already knows: running with the Cougars for 50 minutes is a different story.

NDA pulled away with a dominant second half in a 22-6 rout that was on running clock for most of the second half. The Cougars are now 24-0 and advance to the state final, where they hope to repeat as D2 state champs.

East Longmeadow’s season ends at 18-4.

“Absolutely, I think, especially this team, I think that was why it was a tougher first half for us,” said NDA’s Emma Connerty, who scored four goals. “They kept up. They were keeping up. That threw us off, because we like our fast breaks and pushing in transition. They were with us, and I think that kind of slowed us down. But, again, we just picked it up in the second half.”

It was a balanced attack for NDA, as Siobhan Colin and Jane Hilsabeck scored four goals. Alexa Kenney and Aubrey McMahon had three each, and Carolina Haggerty, Elizabeth Dillon, Taylor Watts, and Reilly Walsh all had one goal apiece.

NDA led most of the first half, but East Longmeadow hung around. The Spartans scored the final three goals of the opening frame, including one from Addy Jordan with nine seconds to go, as NDA only held an 8-5 edge.

But that was as close as the Spartans would get. NDA scored the next 13 goals before the Spartans answered, and it was well over from there.

“We knew that they were going to come out (strong). They were very strong on the draw, very good in transition. I felt like they capitalized on all our first-half mistakes. We got a little careless with the ball, just a little bit too eager with our decisions. They were on every single ground ball, finished every shot. We just needed to make sure we cleaned up our execution in the second half and did a better job finishing,” Notre Dame head coach Meredith McGinnis said.

Westwood scores late to earn thrilling 10-9 victory over Franklin https://www.bostonherald.com/2023/06/13/westwood-scores-late-to-earn-thrilling-10-9-victory-over-franklin/ Wed, 14 Jun 2023 00:29:25 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=3097399 WALPOLE — What Westwood coach Margot Spatola would not have given for a single draw control in the final moments of Tuesday’s Division 1 state semifinal against Franklin.

Luckily, her scintillating senior captain, Lil Hancock, had what her coach was looking for.

Hancock’s ground ball win off the final draw of the game helped the Wolverines seal a 10-9 win, to allow them the opportunity to play for a possible third girls lacrosse state title in a row.

Westwood improves to 22-3, while Franklin ends its season at 20-4.

When asked if she noticed who made that play, Spatola said, “I have no clue,” but acknowledged its importance.

“We needed that,” Spatola said. “It was about time.”

Hancock scored two goals in a balanced Westwood attack. Caroline Nozzolillo, Emilie DeMaio, and Charlotte DeMaio also scored twice, and Kella McGrail and Ava Connaughton each added a goal.

Westwood goalie Riley Harrington made 10 saves and was terrific in the first half, with eight.

But Franklin dominated in the draws in the second half, and worked its way back from an 8-1 deficit. Led by Katie Peterson, who was great on the draws and scored four goals, the Panthers had all the momentum.

Hancock secured the final draw though with a little over three minutes remaining, and Westwood survived.

“It was key,” said Hancock, who complimented Nozzilillo on the last possession. “We had to get it, or else they would have scored and made it a tie game. It could have gone into overtime. But we knew we could get it, and we all trusted each other and fought to the end.”

St. John’s Prep rolls to a 14-5 victory over Hingham https://www.bostonherald.com/2023/06/13/st-johns-prep-rolls-to-a-14-5-victory-over-hingham/ Wed, 14 Jun 2023 00:16:32 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=3097580 WESTON – With each passing evening this week, William Sawyer started to have a greater hunch that he would be given an increased role when St. John’s Prep took the field Tuesday for the Final Four.

What the senior attackman didn’t truly realize, however, was that he was on the verge of turning a career performance. Sawyer went on to register a game-high four goals, as the top-seeded Eagles clinched their third straight trip to the Div. 1 boys lacrosse championship with a convincing 14-5 rout of No. 5 Hingham at Weston High School.

“I didn’t get told, but I had a feeling I would play,” Sawyer said afterward. “I felt good coming into the game, and everything went well today.”

These two historic programs had already engaged in one barn-burner this spring on May 27, with St. John’s Prep (21-1) closing its regular season with a thrilling 12-9 win. Most envisioned a similar battle in the semifinals. For the first seven minutes, it certainly appeared that it would pan out as such. Harlan Graber sniped a goal 48 seconds into play to provide the Eagles a 1-0 edge, a score that would hold until later in the opening frame.

Hingham (20-3) made an emphasis to neutralize St. John’s Prep standout attackman Jimmy Ayers, and successfully did so for the most part. However, in doing so, the Harbormen began to surrender opportunities midway through the first quarter. Cam McCarthy found the net off a rebound with 4:48 to play in the frame for the Eagles. Jake Vana then added a pair of goals before Christian Esposito scored following a face-off win to close the stanza. Suddenly, St. John’s Prep was leading 5-1 at the end of the stanza.

Yet, even when the Harbormen managed to find ways to subtract those star players, someone else managed to step up for the Eagles.

Enter Sawyer. The senior proceeded to record a hat trick in the second quarter alone, the last of which came with 12.4 seconds left in the half as St. John’s Prep seized an 8-1 lead at the break.

“I actually was thinking this morning about last year when we went down (to Hingham) and jumped out on them,” chuckled St. John’s Prep lacrosse coach John Pynchon. “We did everything really well in the first half, and I think we were up 8-1. Then in the second game, it was much closer. I was like: ‘It would be really nice if we could flip those games this year, because we already did the close one.’ ”

While Hingham found somewhat of a spark from senior captain Joe Hennessey (two goals, assist), the Harbormen were simply unable to keep up with the Eagles’ high-octane attack. When all was said and done, eight different players scored for St. John’s Prep.

McCarthy, Vana and Lucas Verrier each finished with two goals apiece for the Eagles.

To this point in the postseason, St. John’s Prep has outscored its opposition at a whopping 57-9. Now, the Eagles will look to continue their dynastic run by winning the Div. 1 title for a third consecutive year this upcoming weekend.

When the game was over, the Eagles gathered for their traditional ‘Circle’ to celebrate their latest victory. It was then that Sawyer was awarded the ‘Chain’ for the second time this year, given to the player of the game.

“It’s my senior year,” said Sawyer. “This is what I live for. I want to win (it all) as a senior. I’m just trying to do that.”

Div. 1 softball: Central Catholic holds off Peabody https://www.bostonherald.com/2023/06/13/div-1-softball-central-catholic-holds-off-peabody/ Wed, 14 Jun 2023 00:14:45 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=3097413 LOWELL — It was pretty ugly at times for Central Catholic on Tuesday in the Div. 1 softball semifinals against No. 5 Peabody. But with one swing of an unlikely hero’s bat, the ugliness turned to beauty.

No. 9 batter Bella Boyer rocked River View Field with a two-run homer in the fifth inning that gave the top-seeded Raiders a lead it never relinquished in a 4-2 win over the Tanners.

Central (23-1) advances to face either Taunton or King Philip at UMass Amherst this weekend for a state title.

“I’m just happy that I could get a hit like that for the team,” Boyer said.

One of those people not truly surprised that Boyer came up huge was Central coach Stacy Ciccolo.

“We have a lot of faith in Bella,” Ciccolo said. “We like having her in that spot so we can turn the order around.”

The Raiders were fortunate to be in a 2-2 tie as they left nine on base over the first four innings against Peabody’s Abby Bettencourt. Central also committed three errors and saw Logan Lomasney and Bettencourt homer in the first and third innings respectively to give the Tanners (22-2) a 2-1 lead.

Central (23-1) tied the game in the bottom of the fourth as Amelia Orelles led off with a walk. A ground out and a fly ball got pinch runner Jill Clements to third with two outs where Caitlin Milner singled to left to deadlock things.

Peabody threatened in the top of the fifth as Bettencourt scorched a double to left and stole third, setting up the game’s most controversial moment.

Lomasney hit a slow roller to first baseman Ava Perrotta, who stepped on the bag and fired home to get a sliding Bettencourt by inches. Peabody coach Tawny Palmieri vehemently argued the call but it was upheld.

That set the stage for Boyer’s dramatics. Perotta singled and was still at first with two outs when Boyer turned on the first pitch she saw and rocketed one well over the bullpen in left field for a 4-2 lead.

“Abby was doing a great job of keeping us off-balance and we didn’t do a great job of getting the hits we needed with people on,” Ciccolo said. “Once we finally settled down we were able to make the adjustments.”

Elizabeth Kearney came in for Julia Malowitz in the circle to begin the sixth and she slammed the door on Peabody in the final two innings to save the win.

Norton track named after coaching legend Kent Taylor https://www.bostonherald.com/2023/06/12/norton-track-named-after-coaching-legend-kent-taylor/ Tue, 13 Jun 2023 00:45:25 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=3094200 NORTON — Speaking under a bright sky with a touch of a warm breeze, Norton High track captain Jake Antosca fought back tears when he spoke of his former coach at the dedication of the Lancers’ track as the Kent A. Taylor Track Monday evening.

Taylor, a legend in the Massachusetts high school cross country and track community, coaching teams to several Tri-Valley League and state titles, had a life-changing event in May 2020. One of the most well-liked and popular track coaches in the state, Taylor was diagnosed with a Grade 4 Gliobastoma cancer with an IDH Mutation that resulted in doctors performing emergency surgery, removing 90% of the tumor on his frontal lobe and a secondary lesion behind it. There were setbacks along the way as well. Taylor endured blood clots in his lungs and a deep bone thrombosis.

Antosca spoke of Taylor’s courage and unwavering optimism in his battle against the disease.

“Many of us will never have to hear the words; ‘You have cancer.’ Thus, many of us will not experience cancer,” Antosca told the crowd from the podium at the edge of the 50-yard-line. “But unfortunately, many of us will have to witness cancer. In this instance, we saw Coach Taylor’s life start to slip through the hands of time and all we could do was watch. In a period of chaos, never once did we see Coach Taylor hesitate or surrender to the challenge at hand, rather we saw him valiantly win his battle with cancer; spoiling the plans of any odds against him. Only one word can describe him: Hero.”

Taylor, who received a standing ovation when he went to the podium, thanked everyone in attendance and said each one of them has made an impact in his life.

“It significantly changed the trajectory of my life and my family’s lives,” said Taylor of his more than three-year odyssey. “All things considered, my life mantra has become carpe diem (seize the day). I live by this every day and I would encourage all of you to try and do the same.”

Taylor said he was “in shock” when he heard there was a student-athlete movement to have the track named for him. “I have never been more humbled in my life,” he said. “Rest assured, this is a memory I will take with me for the rest of my life.”

Taylor especially thanked school superintendent Dr. Joseph F. Baeta. “This facility will be part of your legacy too sir. Thank you for the support you’ve given to the schools for over 30 years,” Taylor said.

Baeta asked all the student athletes in attendance, who had Taylor as a teacher or coach, to stand. “Folks this is what it is all about,” he said. “Coming back as a community in a great town.”

Baetra said the process of a dedication for Taylor was a “unique” one. A facility is not just named after anyone and there is a process that includes a nomination, and a “unanimous endorsement” by the school committee and then to him. “All of it, from Day 1 was unanimous,” Baetra said. “It was the right thing we wanted to do as a school community. I’ve never seen a student movement to name a facility after one of their coaches,” he said. “Typically, this happens after retirement and all that. But in this particular case, to have the civic pride of students wanting to do this is so meaningful and original for the community of Norton.”

Brookline, Lexington advance to Division 1 boys tennis final https://www.bostonherald.com/2023/06/12/brookline-lexington-advance-to-division-1-boys-tennis-final/ Tue, 13 Jun 2023 00:43:39 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=3094241 NEWTON — The stage is set for the Division 1 boys tennis state championships and neither team has lost a match yet this season.

No. 1 Brookline (23-0) took down No. 4 Wellesley 4-1 while No. 3 Lexington (24-0) squeezed by No. 2 St. John’s Prep 3-2 to advance to the state final at MIT on Saturday.

For Brookline, this is a chance to avenge a loss in last year’s state championship, while the Minutemen revel in finally advancing out of the semifinal.

Lexington reached the state championship in 2016 but has otherwise struggled to advance out of the semifinal round for much of the past decade. Head coach Chris Pugliese said he is thrilled for his players.

“We’ve had some bad luck in the semis, I’m not going to lie,” Pugliese said. “It’s good for the kids to see that they can get to the state title because they have been heartbroken.”

The key to the Minutemen’s victory came from the second doubles, which took consecutive sets and put the first victory on the board for Lexington. Pugliese was thrilled with this turn, as the position lost to the Eagles earlier in the season.

“Two doubles impressed me,” Pugliese said. “I didn’t expect them to come first off the court, that was good to see.”

The second point came from top singles player Joel McCandless, and the senior captain was ecstatic to finally reach the state championship.

“This is momentous for us,” McCandless said. “It’s a position we’ve never been in and as long as we stay grounded and remember what we are her to do. Having a few laughs along the way helps us out.”

On the other set of courts at Newton South High School, the Warriors grinded out four consecutive victories to clinch the berth in the final. Head coach Mike Mowatt credited the success to excellent play right out of the gate.

“I thought my guys got off to good starts,” Mowatt said. “I knew it was going to be a competitive match, but we had the confidence going in.”

Mowatt says the team will now turn its attention to some tune-up scrimmages before facing the Minutemen. He said the main focus will be confidence.

“In the finals last year, we were a little hesitant,” Mowatt said. “I saw a lot of confident strokes right from the start today. If they do that against Lexington, we should have a pretty good chance.”

Senior Owen Eskey echoed that statement, saying that his team is capable of victory if it keeps focused.

“A lot of it for us is mental,” Eskey said. “Maybe we got a little tight last year, we need to let loose and play our best tennis in the final.”

Boston Latin stays unbeaten https://www.bostonherald.com/2023/06/11/boston-latin-stays-unbeaten/ Sun, 11 Jun 2023 23:46:52 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=3092523 After holding off a gritty Winchester team 3-2 in Sunday’s quarterfinal showdown, Boston Latin girls’ tennis coach Paulanne Wilson had to think for a moment to remember the last time the Wolfpack had advanced deep into the Div. 1 tournament.

“It’s been a while since we’ve gotten to the quarters, but we lost, so this is a big thing for us,” said Wilson of her top-seeded, unbeaten (19-0) squad. “We knew this was going to happen. I mean, you don’t take anything for granted. I knew they were coming and they meant business. They’ve been here before a lot of times. When you get to this point either you win or you lose.”

The afternoon was certainly a dramatic one as the 9th-seeded Red & Black (16-4) tried to extend its season. Winchester’s Daryana Skobeleva and the second doubles squad of Sophie Kim and Andrea Bilic were victorious matches, tying the contest at 2-2 with Latin’s Vanessa Vu locked in a three-hour match with Winchester’s Claire Lupien.

Both players were fighting fatigue in the third set, but it was the freshman Vu who dropped in scoring shots close to the net for the win (6-7, 6-2, 6-4), clinching a trip to the semifinals against defending state champion Lexington. The Red & Blue picked up a huge win against the Minutemen on May 21, making the semifinal match loom even bigger.

Halina Nguyen, the Wolfpack’s freshman No. 1 singles player, felt sluggish early against Kaitlin Tan, but bulled her way through to a 6-0, 6-0 win.

“It was really hot out,” said Nguyen. “I could feel it affecting me. I just felt really heavy. My forehands were definitely the reason I won today because I was able to manipulate the shots even better.”

Nguyen is looking forward to going up against Lexington’s terrific No. 1 singles player Diya Pachamuthu after nerves got the better of her in their last match.

“Last time I played her she gave me a lot of short balls,” said Nguyen. “Just balls that were basically around the service line. And in tennis those are the balls you have to take advantage of and the ones you have to win. Last time I played her I was so nervous even though I know I should have lost that match. I was just hitting it back, you know? I wasn’t finishing the point.”

Wilson stressed the importance of Boston Latin staying focused and engaged moving forward. “We’ll approach it the same way,” she said. “Everybody needs to stay focused, play their game, have confidence and know they can win. We have to play aggressive. You can’t be on your heels. You have to be on your toes.”

Methuen ousts Central Catholic in 4-2 win https://www.bostonherald.com/2023/06/11/methuen-ousts-central-catholic-in-4-2-win/ Sun, 11 Jun 2023 23:39:35 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=3092369 Cam Roper stood in amazement while his star Matt Pappalardo could only smile ear to ear. Methuen’s dream tournament run includes a final four.

Pappalardo threw six innings of two-run ball while also belting the go-ahead RBI triple as No. 21 Methuen advanced to the Div. 1 state semifinals with a stunning, 4-2 win over No. 4 Central Catholic on Sunday afternoon at Haverhill Stadium.

Methuen, which has won three straight road games, will take on No. 1 Franklin for a spot in the state final.

“I haven’t slept in two weeks,” said Roper, the Rangers head coach. “Look at our guys. Cinderella. Snow White. Call us whatever you want. We’re a hell of a baseball team.”

The highly anticipated matchup between Merrimack Valley Conference foes entered the sixth deadlocked 2-2. Methuen, however, jumped in front. Owen Kneeland led off the top of the frame with a single, setting up an opportunity for Pappalardo. The Rangers’ best hitter blasted a triple to deep right center to give the Rangers a 3-2 lead.

Later in the inning Methuen grabbed insurance when Owen Sullivan scampered home on a passed ball. Now in front, Pappalardo spun his best inning, striking out the side in the sixth before Sullivan came in as the Rangers’ established closer and fanned three to start the celebration.

“This is different from anything else I’ve been able to experience,” Pappalardo said. “Our energy has been high. We’re together as a team. It’s been so much fun.”

Both Pappalardo and Central Catholic starter Josh Florence cruised through the first two innings but the Rangers jumped in front in the third when Kneeland grounded a two-run single to right to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.

One half-inning later the Raiders evened the score as Will Norris hit an infield RBI single before Nate Kearney connected on an RBI groundout to tie the game 2-2. Pappalardo, however, worked out of trouble in the 4th and induced a double play in the fifth to send the game to the sixth even.

After starting the season 1-7 the Rangers are now headed to the Final Four, a run reminiscent of Xaverian (2012) and Norwood’s (2016) state championship years where both entered the tournament with .500 records.

“We feel we can compete with anyone. We needed to put together some clean baseball games,” Roper said. “Earlier we were more of a divided team but now we’re playing together and the kids are showing what they can do.”

Burlington rallies late, earns berth in Div. 2 state softball semifinals https://www.bostonherald.com/2023/06/11/burlington-rallies-late-earns-berth-in-div-2-state-softball-semifinals/ Sun, 11 Jun 2023 23:31:31 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=3092015 BURLINGTON — Ahead of her team’s softball game with North Attleboro on Sunday, Burlington coach Kristen Farrell had a feeling it was going to come down be a one-run decision.

Farrell’s feeling proved to be right on the money. Her Red Devils seized the one chance they got against Gatorade Massachusetts Player of the Year Kelly Colleran.

Burlington took advantage of the only two walks Colleran issued to plate a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Red Devils ace Cece Imbimbo did the rest as she struck out 13 to lead her team to the Div. 2 semifinals with a 2-1 win at Marvin Field. The Red Devils (19-4) move on to face top-seeded Westfield in the semifinals.

“You just knew it was going to come down to a run with how the pitching was and it wasn’t going to be easy to push them across,” Farrell said.

After striking out 11 times and being held to one hit through five by Colleran, it looked like the Red Devils were in trouble. But when Imbimbo walked to begin the bottom of the sixth, the door was opened for a comeback.

Megan Ryan sacrificed Imbimbo to second and a wild pitch put her 60 feet from tying the game. Maddie King then worked a walk as the Red Devils plate patience began to pay off. Left fielder Shea McDonald was able to get a fly ball just deep enough to left that allowed Imbimbo to score just ahead of Colleran’s tag at the plate.

King took third on the play and that proved to be pivotal as Colleran (12 K, 2 BB, 1H) uncorked a wild pitch with Katie Hayes up that allowed King to scamper home with the go-ahead run.

“We kept telling the kids not to go at her pace at the plate. And that helped us to be patient and see more pitches,” Farrell said.

Suddenly staked to a 2-1 lead, Imbimbo went to the circle in the seventh trying to seal a win. Her 11th and 12th strikeouts sandwiched a Mary Ellen Charette infield single.

A hit batter kept the Red Rocketeers alive and had the tying run on second base. But Imbimbo regrouped and fanned Grace Simmons swinging to end the game.

“Cece is one of those type of players that doesn’t come around very often,” Farrell said. “Nothing seems to bother her. And she just wants the ball. You could see at the end that there was no way she was going to lose. She was just determined to strike her out at the end.”

North Attleboro’s lone run came in the fourth when Colleran led off with a single, was bunted to second and scored on a Charette infield single.

O’Bryant headed to volleyball semifinal after defeating North Quincy https://www.bostonherald.com/2023/06/10/obryant-headed-to-volleyball-semifinal-after-defeating-north-quincy/ Sat, 10 Jun 2023 23:17:35 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=3091335 QUINCY – Longtime head coach Paul Pitts-Dilley remembers quite well how drab the state of the O’Bryant boys volleyball program was 14 years ago.

Now, after winning their first playoff game in 19 years just two seasons ago, the revamped Tigers are headed to their first-ever state semifinal.

Behind 25 kills from senior star Jonathan Narsjo in an otherwise well-rounded effort Saturday afternoon, sixth-seeded O’Bryant overcame deficits in the third and fourth sets to defeat reigning finalist No. 3 North Quincy, 3-1 (25-18, 22-25, 27-25, 25-23), in a Div. 2 state quarterfinal.

Senior Son Nguyen dished out 50 kills to add to his record-breaking career with the Tigers, while Ziyou Zhang added six kills with four aces. Desmond Ugoji chipped in eight kills with four blocks, and Nathan Tan had nine kills with three aces.

O’Bryant will face No. 2 Agawam at Assabet Valley on Tuesday for a spot in the Div. 2 state title game.

“I’m super excited, I’m trying not to cry here,” Pitts-Dilley said. “It’s amazing. Where we were 14 years ago – we go from not winning a state tournament game in 19 years to being a Final Four and counting team. … I’m super proud.”

“The second the game ended, I wanted to celebrate with my guys, but the first thing was I literally broke down in tears,” Narsjo added. “Every year, it’s a new height that we’re reaching. … It’s the most important thing to me.”

It’s only fitting how large of a turnaround the Tigers displayed from a 3-0 loss to the Raiders to close out the regular season, exemplifying the major improvements the program has made to put itself in this position. It’s also fitting how O’Bryant, which frequently struggles with transportation for road games and even had the power in its own gym go out to move a home game this year, overcame adversity once again to move on.

Rushing over from graduation earlier in the day, the Tigers got off to a hot start by getting small contributions across the board. North Quincy stars Cameron Johnston and Nate Caldwell couldn’t get much going in a 25-18 loss in the first set, but combined for 12 kills in the second to build a lead as large as seven points in a 25-22 win.

Tied at 1-1, Johnston (16 kills), Caldwell (10 kills) and Liam Bailey (seven kills) continued to thrive off of senior Bobby Lin’s setting (42 assists) alongside middles Anthony Chui and Dylan Clifford in the third set to turn a 15-9 deficit into a 21-21 tie. North Quincy was even in the driver’s seat with a 25-24 lead after trailing 24-22, but a red-hot Narsjo buried his 11th kill of the frame to hold the Raiders off. Nathan Tan and Ashton Mei took care of the next two Nguyen sets, and O’Bryant escaped with a 27-25 win toward a 2-1 match lead.

North Quincy came out firing in the fourth in search of forcing a fifth set, leading as much as 18-12. But the Tigers, who focus on runs of three at a time in those situations, clawed back behind their depth. Zhang’s two aces and another Narsjo kill played a part in a 7-0 run for a 23-21 lead, and kills from Narsjo and Tan closed out the win.

“I think it’s our experience, it’s been the same guys that have been playing together for so many years now,” Narsjo said. “We know that the set’s not done. We’ve played hundreds and hundreds of sets together, and we know that the set isn’t done until it’s 25-whatever the score is. … We have to come back, no matter what.”

BC High gets better of Xaverian, advances to Div. 1 state lacrosse semifinals https://www.bostonherald.com/2023/06/10/bc-high-gets-better-of-xaverian-advances-to-div-1-state-lacrosse-semifinals/ Sat, 10 Jun 2023 23:04:21 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=3091228 Dating back to the first days of tryouts, BC High boys lacrosse coach Marcus Craigwell has attempted to instill a team mentality. A mindset, where it is all or nothing for the Eagles. Falling short of a Div. 1 state championship once again was not going to be accepted.

A lofty goal? Sure, yet with each passing day, they are becoming closer and closer to making it a reality.

Will Emsing (hat trick, two assists) and Patrick Maroney (hat trick, assist) led the attack, while Cooper Chapman (two goals, three assists) also had a banner afternoon as second-seeded BC High punched its ticket to the state semifinals for a third straight season with a convincing 14-5 victory over No. 7 Xaverian.

The score appear lopsided, but this game was essentially a tale of two chapters. For the entirety of the first quarter, the two Catholic Conference foes traded swings, with BC High (18-2) taking a 5-4 lead into the second.

With 8:44 to play in the half, Xaverian (12-7) turned in arguably one of the plays of the year as freshman midfielder Jake Fraga corralled a loose ball. In doing so, he lost his balance, and lobbed an over-the-shoulder pass to Dante Mariani out of desperation. The junior attackman somehow hauled it in, and sniped the cage in one underhanded motion. Suddenly, the Hawks’ sideline was exploding, and their fans erupted into pandemonium as they cut it to a 6-5 game.

“I told our guys that they were going to play with desperation,” said Craigwell. “They’re going to do stuff that they’ve never done before. They were going to tap into a different type of energy. We were prepared for it, right? They gave us a really good first quarter. We weren’t winning many faceoffs. We just needed to rely on what we know. Just play our game. Just figure it out through the pace, through the chaos. We did that in the second quarter, and we didn’t let up.”

Some teams might wilt following such a sequence. Instead, the Eagles responded with authority.

Georgetown commit James Carroll proceeded to find the net, only to have Maroney net his second goal 1:01 later, giving BC High an 8-5 advantage with 7:29 to play in the second quarter.

“We trusted each other,” Carroll said. “That was our mindset going in. We knew that was kind of a lucky goal. This was our third time playing them, we know what they have. We kind of felt that was all they had after that first quarter. So we trusted each other throughout the rest of the game.”

Emsing and Brody Rice later added a pair of tallies in the closing minutes of the frame, as the Eagles constructed a 10-5 lead by intermission. The momentum carried on into the third, as Emsing and Maroney each completed their respective hat tricks with a goal apiece, and BC High cruised from there, netting eight unanswered tallies.

Cole Jette paced Xaverian with two goals.

Last season, Carroll was forced to miss the Eagles’ Div. 1 state championship bout with St. John’s Prep after sustaining a lacerated kidney and spleen during a game with Acton-Boxboro in the Round of 8. The following few months were a journey back to recovery. Now, he and his teammates will look to return to the title game by knocking off the very same opponent.

“You never know when it’s going to be your last time playing,” said Carroll. “You never know if one hit is going to take you out. So I think it’s just about keeping that mentality, about going as hard as possible. Especially today … this is my sixth year here on this field, and this is the last game. We wanted to leave everything out on Cotter Field today. I think we did that.”

Bishop Fenwick stuns top-seeded St. Mary’s in nine-inning thriller https://www.bostonherald.com/2023/06/10/bishop-fenwick-stuns-top-seeded-st-marys-in-nine-inning-thriller/ Sat, 10 Jun 2023 20:11:26 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=3090993 LYNN — A pair of Catholic Central League rivals locked horns in a Division 3 softball quarterfinal on Saturday that won’t soon be forgotten.

No. 9 Bishop Fenwick (15-9) received a two-run single from Katie O’Brien in the top of the ninth inning to break a scoreless tie in pulling off a 2-0 shocker over No. 1 St. Mary’s (20-2) at Grace Rogato Field.

The Crusaders, winners of 10 straight, move on to face Norton in the state semifinals.

“That was just nuts,” Fenwick coach Brian Seabury said. “Katie did a great job of hitting the ball where it was pitched and got us the hit that we needed.”

It felt like neither team was going to score as Spartans hurler Anna Fringuelli and her counterpart, Gigi Aupont, traded zeroes for over two hours. But in the ninth, it was Fringuelli and the Spartans who blinked first.

Walks to Mia Mercurio and Aupont began the frame. After a sacrifice from Sophia Longo, O’Brien swung at the first pitch and dumped a single into short right to give her team the lead.

The rest of the job was left to Aupont, who danced out of jams in the fifth and sixth and seventh innings to keep the game scoreless.

After Fringuelli reached on a leadoff error, Aupont (CG, 4 hits, 8 strikeouts) got back-to-back groundouts before she made a spectacular diving catch on Michaela Walker’s pop-up to end the game and spark a wild celebration.

“I kind of equate what Gigi does to being a goaltender in hockey that makes 40 saves a game,” Seabury said. “That’s just the way she pitches and we expect that from her every time she goes to the mound.”

Maddie McDonald overtime hero for Norwell girls lacrosse team https://www.bostonherald.com/2023/06/09/maddie-mcdonald-overtime-hero-for-norwell-girls-lacrosse-team/ Sat, 10 Jun 2023 01:22:28 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=3090310 COHASSET — After winning the draw in overtime, the Norwell girls lacrosse team drew up a play that didn’t have Maddie McDonald as the finisher. The senior captain was still ready if she was called.

The moment came and she delivered a blistering shot into the twine to give the Clippers a thrilling 9-8 victory over Cohasset in the Division 3 quarterfinals.

“I wasn’t supposed to get it, so I was just there for the team,” McDonald said. “I ended up getting open in the middle and I put a fake on and put it away.”

While the moment was big, Clippers coach Kara Connerty said her team was expecting the game to be very tight.

“We knew it was going to be a terrific game,” Connerty said. “In practice this last week we have done scenario plays.”

She said that the veteran presence on the team was a key factor in the victory.

“The senior strength,” Connerty said. “We have 10 seniors, four on defense, and keeping a high-powered attacking team to eight goals just speaks to the strength of those four.”

Neither team took a multiple-goal lead in the contest. The Skippers scored the opening tally, but after the first half it was 4-3 Norwell. Cohasset quickly took a 5-4 lead in the second half, but the teams traded leads up until the final minute.

A huge key to this was excellent play in the crease. Aizza Chase stopped numerous high-quality Clipper chances, including a blast from McDonald as time expired. However, 10 saves from goalie Charlotte Pithie, including several leg saves from the slot, helped Norwell maintain pace.

“I always get the save on my leg,” Pithie said. “I don’t know why, it just happens.”

After winning the draw, the Clippers looked for an opening, before McDonald finally put the game away. Connerty said that her captain has been clutch all year.

“She’s been tremendous all season long,” Connerty said. “Her stick is so strong and her will to find a way to put that ball away with that pressure was huge.”

McDonald led the Clippers with four goals, Danielle Cox had two and Charlise Cox, Caroline Burtch and Margot Bonnevie added the other Norwell tallies. Reese Hansen scored a hat trick for Cohasset, Laney Larsen had two and Kira Fulton, Kate Greer and Schiffman added the other Skipper goals.

The victory avenged a 6-3 loss to the Skippers on April 4 and advanced the Clippers to the semifinals, where they await Hanover or Medfield. McDonald said that the team will enjoy the victory for the moment, but will be ready to face the next challenge.

“This weekend we will be dialed in and working on whoever we play next,” McDonald said.

Acton-Boxboro makes statement by rolling past Lincoln-Sudbury https://www.bostonherald.com/2023/06/09/acton-boxboro-makes-statement-by-rolling-past-lincoln-sudbury/ Sat, 10 Jun 2023 01:13:07 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=3090297 ACTON — All season, Acton-Boxboro has been manufacturing ways to find motivation, and newfound ways to prove that the Revolution truly belong in the conversation for an elusive Div. 1 boys lacrosse championship.

On Friday night, the latest opportunity to make a statement arrived on their doorstep in the form of a bitter rival, and they succeeded in very impressive fashion. Seniors Tyler Clayton (four goals, two assists) and Cam Matthews (four goals, assist) shouldered things offensively, as third-seeded Acton-Boxboro punched its ticket to the Final Four with a convincing 15-7 rout of No. 6 Lincoln-Sudbury.

“We wanted to get out to a good start,” Clayton said. “(Lincoln-Sudbury) is such a great team, and we knew that if we could possess the ball, we knew we could do our thing, do anything we wanted to. We just wanted to get right to the ball, (and make plays).”

This game was tabbed as a showdown between two of the state’s top teams, and for obvious reason. Both programs were flooded with talent, had similar play styles and great coaching to boot, so most felt this matchup could be considered a coin flip.

Yet, when this heavyweight bout kicked off, the Revolution (17-4) threw the first series of jabs, and the Warriors found themselves struggling to gain their collective footing. Matthews would open things with a goal nine seconds into play, before Ryan Cho and Christian Maranian added tallies during the next handful of minutes. With 8:09 left in the opening frame, Acton-Boxboro had already constructed a 3-0 lead.

“We knew we could score in clips if we could get the ball,” said Acton-Boxboro coach Pat Ammendolia. “We knew we’d have the opportunity to score a lot, so yeah, that was on the scouting report.”

The Revolution would build a first-half cushion as great as 6-1 off a goal by Joey Cronin with 9:44 left in the second quarter, before Lincoln-Sudbury (13-6) began to stage. Ryan Berkel and Van Tanguay each tallied a goal in the second quarter, as the Warriors cut their deficit to 7-3. Lincoln-Sudbury would draw within 7-4 with 8:10 remaining in the third off a goal from Luke Ohler. But then, the levee finally collapsed for the Warriors as Acton-Boxboro closed the game on a 7-2 scoring run, with Clayton scoring three of his four goals in the second half.

In addition to Clayton and Matthews, the Revolution received a great spark from Cho (goal, three assists). Will Steinkrauss recorded 13 saves in the cage for Acton-Boxboro, while Mike Calvo won 14 faceoffs.

Berkel finished with a hat trick to carry Lincoln-Sudbury offensively, while Tanguay also added a pair of assists in his effort.

Acton-Boxboro will now take on the winner of Saturday’s Round of 8 tilt between second-seeded BC High and No. 7 Xaverian in the Final Four.

“(Lincoln-Sudbury) got the best of us here in 2021,” said Matthews. “We remember things. We remember it all. To come out here, prove a point and shock the state – that’s all it takes.”

Healthy Newton North eliminates second-seeded Lowell on road https://www.bostonherald.com/2023/06/09/healthy-newton-north-eliminates-second-seeded-lowell-on-road/ Sat, 10 Jun 2023 00:31:40 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=3090204 LOWELL — Despite injuries plaguing a second straight regular season to knock it down in seeding, the Newton North boys volleyball team isn’t letting that get in the way of reaching its potential.

A year removed from a second-round tournament exit, the No. 7 Tigers (17-6) showed just what they’re capable of at full strength by upsetting No. 2 Lowell, 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-18) in a Div. 1 state quarterfinal on Friday.

Smiles spread like wildfire on a team that again suffered new health issues just about every other week, overcoming it to down a legitimate force in the Red Raiders (21-2).

And yet, Newton North isn’t looking at the Final Four trophy as highly as what it aspires for. It gets No. 11 Brookline next after the Warriors upset No. 3 Natick.

“They came out and really showed why we are one of the top teams in the state, and they played their best,” said Newton North head coach Nile Fox. “We’re just ready to keep competing. This feels good, but we’re not OK with it. We want to keep going. … We’ve been hungry for it for a long time.”

Star setter Tyler Randall, who missed about two weeks with an ankle injury, orchestrated an overwhelming attack that flourished in dominant second and third sets with 34 assists. Junior Adam Christianson, weeks after missing a few starts himself, led with 16 vicious kills.

Simon Vardeh proved nearly as deadly with eight kills and two aces, and Samuel Huang’s supreme athleticism broke out with seven kills and three blocks. Sophomore Paul Nelson, who hadn’t been at full health most of the year, complemented them perfectly with five kills.

It’s never easy to dominate the net against Lowell. Cody Fitzpatrick showed how dangerous he is with 13 kills, and there were plenty of jump balls at the net that Lowell won, especially in a 25-20 first-set loss.

Keeping up with Newton North’s depth proved an improbable mission, though.

“It was terrible,” said Christianson of the health woes. “This year, we were able to show I know what we could do last year. … We did really well.”

“It’s really cool to see what it looks like when we have everybody on the roster healthy,” added Fox. “I think everybody did their job. That’s something we’ve been talking about this last end of the season. … I’m really proud of them for that.”

The first set showed the expected rock fight of the highly-anticipated matchup between one of the best in the Bay State Conference and the best of the Merrimack Valley Conference. Tyrell Lout showed off his versatility, and Ceazar Joseph flashed some pop alongside Fitzpatrick to make it interesting.

But after the Tigers’ four primary hitters combined for 14 kills to take that opening set, all phases erupted for Newton North.

Lowell struggled to get much past the blocking of Huang, Peter Reale and Christianson. The Red Raiders picked up steam to fight well toward the end of the set, but trading points only did so much in a 25-16 loss. The momentum didn’t carry over into the third, with Newton North surging to a 14-3 lead as its stars continued to shine.

Lowell utilized good passing and more strong hitting from Fitzpatrick to outscore Newton North 15-11 the rest of the way, but it was far too little for a comeback.

“(Losing last year) fueled us a lot,” Fox said. “We made a pact that we didn’t want to go out in the second round like we did last year. We’ve just been pushing after that.”

Central Catholic remains red hot at MVC rival Chelmsford’s expense https://www.bostonherald.com/2023/06/08/central-catholic-remains-red-hot-at-mvc-rival-chelmsfords-expense/ Fri, 09 Jun 2023 00:21:02 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=3088622 HAVERHILL — So far the MIAA State Tournament is bringing out the best in Central Catholic.

Lukasz Rondeau fired a complete-game shutout, allowing just three hits and striking out eight while the Central Catholic offense exploded for five runs in the fourth inning on its way to an 8-0 win over No. 13 Chelmsford on Thursday afternoon in the Division 1 baseball Round of 16 at Northern Essex Community College.

Central Catholic will take on No. 21 Methuen in the quarterfinals Sunday at noon at Haverhill Stadium.

“Lukasz got stronger as he went and the last four innings he was lights out,” Central Catholic coach John Sexton said. “He is typically someone where if you want to get him, you better get to him early. He was very good today.”

Rondeau and Chelmsford’s Matthew Stuart were locked in a pitcher’s duel through the first three and a half innings, but in the home half of the fourth the Raiders broke through.

A hit batter and two walks loaded the bases with two outs and Jake Bartlett connected on a line drive RBI single to right to put the hosts up 1-0. Moments later, No. 9 hitter Jeremy Dela Cruz provided separation by drilling a bases-clearing double to left center to put Central on top 4-0. Joshua Florence capped off the two-out rally with an RBI triple to center to stretch the advantage to five.

“We just focus on having one good at bat in a row and it worked out today,” Sexton said. “Matthew Stuart is good. He throws hard and throws a lot of strikes. We had a big inning where we got five and then cracked it open later. That’s the biggest hit that Jeremy has had at Central Catholic.”

Rondeau survived a bases-loaded one-out scare in the first and then hit cruise control. The left-hander allowed a mere three baserunners between the second and seventh innings, with none reaching scoring position. Central Catholic put on the exclamation point in the bottom of the sixth as Merrimack Valley Conference Division 1 player of the year Nate Kearney crushed a three-run double to center field to make it 8-0 Raiders.

“Methuen is probably the hottest team in Massachusetts,” Sexton said of the upcoming matchup. “This is the part of the year where you have to beat real good pitching to win. That’s the price of poker.”

Silver Lake downs Grafton in Div. 2 softball https://www.bostonherald.com/2023/06/08/silver-lake-downs-grafton-in-div-2-softball/ Fri, 09 Jun 2023 00:17:41 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=3088630 KINGSTON — Even with an early deficit, eighth-seeded Silver Lake battled back and never trailed after the first inning to advance to the Div. 2 softball quarterfinals.

With a resilient bottom of the order, the Lakers came away with a 6-2 victory over No. 9 Grafton in the Div. 2 Round of 16 contest at Silver Lake Thursday afternoon.

“What we’ve focused on this year is staying composed,” said Lakers coach Tony Pina about being able to shake off the early deficit. “Our highs don’t get too high and our lows don’t get too low.”

Silver Lake (20-2) scored quickly after allowing a homer in the top of the first as a Madyson Bryan grounder to short scored Alanna Waters from third knotted the score 1-1.

In the bottom of the second, junior captain Nina O’Neil led off the frame by reaching via a walk and sophomore Hannah Selig put two runners in scoring position with a double to left. Sophomore Kenna Slyker stepped up to the dish and hit the first pitch just over the left field foul pole to put the Lakers in front for good at 4-1.

“As a No. 8 batter (Slyker) came up and was able to square one up,” Pina said. “If you look at the book, the bottom of our order gave (Grafton) some problems.”

The bottom third of the lineup got on base five out of 10 times in the contest.

Silver Lake got another run in the fourth with an RBI double for junior captain Samantha Waters to score Slyker from second to push the lead to 5-1.

Lakers finished off the scoring with an RBI single up the middle for Bryan to score Waters in the sixth to make it 6-2. This came just after Grafton (16-6) scored a run on two Silver Lake errors.

Not to be outdone, sophomore Delaney Moquin pitched well on the hill to limit the Gators’ attack.

“(Moquin) just goes about her business,” said Pina about the Patriot League MVP. “She is a pitcher and not a thrower. She will throw all of her pitches at any point and she has confidence in all of her pitches.”

She finished with nine strikeouts and the lone earned run came on a home run for senior Abby DuBois.

Next up, the Lakers will travel just over two hours to take on top-seeded and reigning Div. 2 champion Westfield on Saturday at Noon.

“We are going in there loose and going there expecting to compete,” said Pina about making the trek to Westfield.

Bridgewater-Raynham earns another shot at Franklin https://www.bostonherald.com/2023/06/08/bridgewater-raynham-earns-another-shot-at-franklin/ Thu, 08 Jun 2023 04:01:49 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=3087077 One season after having its season end at the hands of Franklin, Bridgewater-Raynham will have a chance at redemption.

Cam Morrison drove in the lone run of the game while Evan Samsel and Luke Barry combined for a three hit shutout as No. 9 Bridgewater-Raynham defeated No. 8 Weymouth, 1-0, in the Division 1 Round of 16 in front of a packed house at Libby Field on Wednesday.

The Trojans (18-4) will face No. 1 Franklin in the Division 1 Quarterfinals on Saturday at 6pm. Franklin defeated the Trojans in the quarterfinals last year before B-R handed Franklin its first loss this past regular season.

“Our regular season was great for us because it got us into a playoff type mentality. If you don’t play like that or teams like that you don’t have a chance,” Bridgewater-Raynham coach Mike Connolly said. “We’re looking forward to it because (Franklin) are the guys everyone wants to beat so hopefully we can do what we’re capable of doing.”

Morrison provided the lone run of the game in the top of the third. After Bobby Quill walked and stole second, Morrison shot an RBI base hit back through the box to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

On the mound Samsel posted zeros through the first three innings but ran into trouble in the fourth when a walk and single put two on with one out. Connolly turned to Barry who got a pair of groundouts around a walk to keep the Trojans in front.

Jack Reyes, meanwhile, settled down for Weymouth allowing just one hit between the fourth and seventh innings to keep the Wildcats within a run.

“You hear and read about Weymouth and it’s all about their pitching staff so we expected a game like this,” Connolly said. “In retrospect that’s been the back bone of our team too.”

Weymouth’s best chance to score came in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Andrew Daley tripled putting the tying run 90 feet away. Barry, however, got a groundout with the infield in and then another dribbler to keep the Trojans in front.

Barry retired the last six batters he faced to seal the 1-0 win.

Scott Longo tosses gem for top-seeded Milton against Norwood https://www.bostonherald.com/2023/06/07/scott-longo-tosses-gem-for-top-seeded-milton-against-norwood/ Thu, 08 Jun 2023 00:39:08 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=3086801 MILTON — When Scott Longo first got word that he was getting the start Wednesday, he knew the pressure would be at its highest. To be frank, he essentially was going to have to turn in one of the best performances of his young career to keep his team’s historic season alive.

Mission accomplished. The sophomore fired six innings of shutout ball, surrendering just one hit while striking out nine as top-seeded Milton continued its intense pursuit of a Div. 2 baseball championship with a 9-3 victory over No. 17 Norwood.

“Fastball was working really good today,” said Longo. “I was painting it good on the outside corner. Slider had good movement, and I was able to get a couple of rollers with that along with the changeup. Changeup headed outside a lot, and it just got rollovers with the contact I was looking for, and the defense always makes the plays behind my back.”

In the evening leading up to this Round of 16 tilt, Milton coach Brendan Morrissey had his group prepare by facing higher velocities at practice with one of the state’s premier pitching prospects in Jack Cropper slated to start for Norwood.

After Longo opened the game by striking out three of the first four hitters he faced, the Wildcats (19-3) stepped up to the plate, and did so with the ultimate form of intensity. Jimmy Fallon got things going with a one-out triple, only to watch Longo head to the dish. The sophomore helped out his own cause by blooping a single to right, providing Milton a 1-0 advantage. The Wildcats were just getting started.

“I think it says a lot about us,” said Fallon. “I know a lot of people outside of our dugout were doubting us. He’s a great pitcher, they thought he could come in and shut us down. I thought we have a lot of confidence. Knew we couldn’t be scared of him. We just came in, and did what we did.”

Milton would tack on a pair of runs following a passed ball and a bases-loaded walk by Reid Dexter, taking a 3-0 lead into the second inning.

“We just wanted to break the ice early,” Morrissey said. “Get a run on the board. We were able to put up a few early and add to it with some aggressive baserunning, and kind of just kept padding the lead throughout the game. Then, Scott Longo was absolutely terrific. We know what he can do, and I think this was a huge game for him to show everyone else what he can do in a big spot.”

Fallon would drive in one more run in the bottom of the fourth off a fielder’s choice to make it 5-0, and his team was off and running.

Cropper tossed 5.1 innings for Norwood (11-11), allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out five. The Mustangs found a spark at the plate in the final stanza, with Gerry Frey, Sean Steeves and Brian Dearborn each driving in a run before Ben Catudal slammed the door shut with a game-ending strikeout for Milton.

“These guys didn’t shake,” Morrissey said. “They just kept competing. They came in ready to hit, dialed up the machine. I said that Jack Cropper’s a hell of a pitcher. They’re a well-coached team. We said that we had to come in and be aggressive. We were aggressive on the bases, aggressive with the bats, and it really paid off in our favor.”

Solid defense sparks Franklin past Concord-Carlisle, 7-3 https://www.bostonherald.com/2023/06/07/solid-defense-sparks-franklin-past-concord-carlisle-7-3/ Thu, 08 Jun 2023 00:30:55 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=3086806 FRANKLIN — A quick start and solid defensive play helped lead No. 7 Franklin to a 7-3 girls lacrosse victory over No. 10 Concord-Carlisle in the second round of the Division 1 MIAA Tournament.

The battle was a rematch of the 14-13 overtime victory for the Panthers from May 16 and Panthers coach Kristin Igoe Guarino said her team’s defensive play was the key to this victory.

“We were playing as a unit,” Igoe Guarino said. “We were fortunate enough to play them a few weeks ago and we knew some of their tendencies.”

The Panthers dominated at the jump, scoring the first five goals of the game. Three of those tallies came from junior Katie Ryan, and she said that the depth of the offensive unit helped her achieve this.

“A huge part of the game together was putting the pieces together on offense,” Ryan said. “I think we have a great lineup, and it was making sure everyone gets a touch.”

The Patriots called a timeout and then rallied to score three straight to end the half. While this was concerning for Franklin after the great start, Igoe Guarino knew Concord-Carlisle could score at any moment.

“We started hot, but we knew it wasn’t going to be a cakewalk,” Igoe Guarino said. “They are a really talented team and had some really good players. We stuck to our game plan, we were tenacious on draws, we rode hard and our defense was locked down.”

The second half saw excellent goaltending from sophomore Ella Mahoney, who was making her return after missing the last few games to an injury. She neutralized several high-quality Patriot chances and said a focus on positioning helped her performance.

“I was fixing my angles,” Mahoney said. “I was staying closer to the pipes and moving my stick where the ball was going. That really helped me make some crucial saves.”

The Panthers added two additional goals in the final half but melted the clock away with several long possessions. Ryan said that maintaining composure fueled this strategy.

“I think the important thing is to make sure we keep our cool,” Ryan said. “The other team is going to get aggressive, so making sure we play our game is necessary.”

Ryan’s three goals were supplemented by single tallies from Kaitlyn Carney, Lindsay Atkinson, Jamie Tanner and Katie Peterson. Concord-Carlisle received two goals from Lydia Karle and one from Willow Cyr.

The victory advanced the Panthers into the quarterfinals. Igoe Guarino said scoring will be the team’s focus as they look toward that matchup.

“We definitely have to continue to work on how to put the ball into the net,” Igoe Guarino said. “Moving forward, we are going to have to score more than seven.”

Millbury’s Ron Silvestri joins elusive baseball coaching fraternity with 600th win https://www.bostonherald.com/2023/06/07/millburys-ron-silvestri-joins-elusive-baseball-coaching-fraternity-with-600th-win/ Thu, 08 Jun 2023 00:19:59 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=3086811 UXBRIDGE — One of the most elite clubs in Massachusetts high school baseball has a new member.

Millbury’s Ron Silvestri became just the 10th coach to win 600 or more games as his Woolies broke a 1-1 tie with No. 6 Uxbridge thanks to a two-run single from Alex Havalotti in the top of the seventh inning and then staved off a bottom of the seventh rally by the Spartans to take a 3-2 win at McCloskey Field.

“This has been a long time coming, obviously,” Silvestri said after getting an ice bath from his team. “This is a big accomplishment for all the kids who have played for me. I’m so thankful for all of them. This is all because of them.”

Silvestri joins a group which includes North Reading’s Frank Carey (736), Leominster’s Emile Johnson (722), Greenfield’s Tom Suchanek (676, heading into Wednesday’s game), Chicopee Comp’s Dan Dulchinos (639), Cardinal Spellman’s Peter Ambrose (628), BC High’s Norm Walsh (622), Dighton-Rehoboth’s Bill Cuthbertson (621), Newburyport’s Bill Pettingell (616) and Burlington’s Jim Curtin (612) in the exclusive 600-win club.

The win was doubly sweet as it not only moves the young Woolies (14-9) into the Division 4 quarterfinals but it came against a Spartan squad that had beaten Millbury twice in the regular season.

The game-winning rally came almost seemingly out of left field as both teams couldn’t get much going against starters Jack Nummela of Uxbridge and Millbury’s James Donnelly.

A leadoff walk to Nick Kolifrath gave the Woolies a chance in the seventh and spelled the end of Nummela’s outing. Grady Walsh came on in relief and promptly walked Matteus Mateo and Aidan Dubois to load the bases.

Havalotti wasted little time in giving his team the lead as he stroked an 0-1 pitch into left, scoring Kolifrath and Mateo to make it 3-1. Walsh got the next three batters to keep it a two-run gap and give his team a chance to try and rally against Donnelly, who had only allowed a first-inning RBI double to Talen Rosborough to that point.

Aiden Blood got the Uxbridge seventh started with a single. Dylan Donnelly followed with an infield hit and the tying runs were aboard.
A fielder’s choice and a wild pitch gave Uxbridge two in scoring position with one out. Tanner Gauthier cut the lead to 3-2 with a sacrifice fly but Donnelly bore down and fanned Braden Cammuso to end the game and spark a huge celebration for those clad in maroon and gold.

“James is just a gamer,” Silvestri said. “I knew that he was going to come out and do a great job. That’s just his makeup.”

This day, however, was all about Silvestri, who acknowledged that he is very happy to join a privileged group of coaches.

“There are some great coaches in that 600 and 700 win club. I am just humbled to be a part of it,” Silvestri said.
